Camp History and Description
ABOUT NABBY’S SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM
A Westchester Day Camp designed & run by educators.
Nabby was designed by an educator, is directed by an educator, and embodies the philosophy of an educator.
In 1970, Frank Bertino became the second director of the Nabby coed summer camp. He came from the Riverdale Country School Day Camp, which he founded, and where he was the school’s athletic director since 1944. As an acclaimed educator and state-renowned football coach with 17 undefeated seasons, Frank understood the attitude and preparation that were necessary for long-term success. Upon leaving Riverdale, he brought to Nabby a professional, detailed summer camp program designed for children’s fun and development. He enlarged the camp property, built additional pools, fields, and buildings, and developed the camp from 100 campers to its present size of 450 campers. His approach as a successful educator, was simply to establish the best camp possible; not solely as a business, but as a great place for children to develop and spend their summers productively.
Since Frank’s death in 1997, the summer camp has been directed by his son, Joe, who has been with Nabby every year since 1970. Joe also looks at Nabby from a professional point of view. As a newly retired physical education teacher and swim coach of 35 years, Joe has lived and taught camp philosophies for years. Lifelong virtues such as teamwork, cooperation, skill development, and personal living skills are the cornerstone of Joe’s goals for Nabby campers.
Joe’s wife, Rita, is the parent liaison in the office. She handles parent questions, transportation, and camp management with a total commitment to our camp philosophy. She is amazingly kid-friendly and is constantly hands-on and involved with camper issues and the daily running of the camp.
Completing the family involvement, Frank, Joe and Matt, have been at camp since age 3, worked as counselors, and now contribute to the business in a variety of ways. His sisters, Gemma and Maddie, also work at camp and all are led by their mother, Flo, who is still the “real boss.”
The Nabby staff echoes the family philosophy and believes you will see in your child, in a Nabby summer, an improved self-confidence and happy camper!
Why Nabby? Because, it’s all about the kids!
